Parking lot safety is important. You may be aware of all the rules on main roads, but parking lot collisions are extremely common. Maybe you didn’t see another car turning down the lane, or a car seemingly came out of nowhere when you were reversing out of a spot. Either way, you need to be extra cautious in parking lots.
Here are 3 parking lot safety tips you can use to avoid collisions.
Stay Off Technology
When your vehicle is in park, you can use your technology. But, the second you shift gears into reverse or forward, even if you aren’t moving yet, you should not be using your phone, entertainment system, or anything other than the steering wheel. Ignore any alerts that pop up on your screen or incoming calls and set up any GPS directions before shifting gears. You should also be mindful of your backup camera if you have one. There are still blind spots, so rely on your car’s mirrors too.
Park In A Well Lit Area
Try to find a parking spot near streetlights. They can help you visually see your surroundings and any pedestrians who are walking around. It can also help keep you safe from any thieves or other dangers. You will be able to see better out of your mirrors when exiting and entering a parking spot, and it may even help you locate your car better when returning to it. And if you have ever struggled to find your car in a packed lot, you will find that parking in a well lit area can help.
Don’t Look Both Ways, Look Every Way
When you are parked in a spot, not only should you look both ways to make sure no pedestrians are near your car, but look in front of and behind you. There are many more blind spots, so it is important to look everywhere before slowly moving out of your spot.
