If your car runs out of gas, whether you are on the highway or pulling into your driveway, it can be stressful. You not only have to find a way to fill your car back up with gas, but you may have to find a way to get your car off a road as well. Being prepared for this situation can help you know what to do.
Here are a few things you can do if your car runs out of gas.
Get To A Safe Spot
If your vehicle runs out of gas on a main road or highway, safely leave your vehicle as soon as possible. You want to be in a safe spot just in case. You can turn on your hazard lights before getting out to alert other cars around you. Make sure your car is in park, with the emergency break on as well.
Check Your Surroundings
You may be on a road trip and have run out of gas. Or, you could be in a well-known neighbourhood. Either way, check your surroundings and know where you are. You can check a map to see the nearest gas stations or urban centres. They may be in walking distance. If they are not, then you may need to call for assistance.
Call For Help
Regardless of who you call, make sure you tell them where you are and what is around you. You can call friends or family to come and pick you up and bring gas. You could also call roadside assistance to come and help you. If you are in danger, make sure you also call 911 right away. Once you have made these calls, wait for any help that is on the way and stay a safe distance from your car.
